The people of Vietnam
Vietnam has approximately 78 million people living in it. Of these people there are 5 main ethnic groups, and dozens of nomadic tribes. The largest ethnic group is called the Viet, which makes up 85% of the population. It was formed thousands of years ago by native northern Vietnamese people, and people from southern China who migrated there. The largest minority group in Vietnam is the Chinese, who are purely from China. Two other minorities living in the lowlands are the Cham and the Khmer. The Cham are the descendants of the ancient Champa kingdom, and there are approximately 50,000 left in Vietnam, working as fishermen and farmers. The Khmer are descendants of the Cambodians who used to live in the swampy region of the Mekong Delta, and their numbers are close to the Cham. Many other residents of Vietnam live in the mountains, and all of those people as a whole are referred to as the Montagnards. Many of the Vietnamese people live as poor rice farmers or fishermen.
